"UNESCO promotes international cooperation among its 190 Member States (as of October 2003) and six Associate Members in the fields of education, science, culture and communication. UNESCO works to create the conditions for true dialogue, based upon respect for commonly shared values and the dignity of each civilization and culture."
UNESCO works as a laboratory of ideas and a standard-setter to forge universal agreements on emerging ethical issues. The organization serves as a clearing house that disseminates and shares information and knowledge while helping member states to build their human and institutional capacities in diverse fields.
UNESCO in Tanzania UNESCO Dar Es Salaam implements UNESCO programmes in Tanzania, providing support, technical backstopping and advice, principally in the fields of education, science and culture.
- The office strives to articulate current and future needs of the country and to facilitate the incorporation of these needs into the framework of UNESCO programmes.
- Support provided by UNESCO Dar Es Salaam often combines a range of modalities of action such as: holding conferences and meetings; commissioning of studies and research; publications; provision of technical and advisory services, supplies and equipment; subventions to NGOs; financial contributions; study and travel grants; support to attend various national, regional and international meetings, workshops and conferences.
- The office works in collaboration with its partners which include: the UNESCO National Commission; various ministries such as Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Culture, Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism; and specialized commissions such as the Commission for Science and Technology.
Major Accomplishments
- Tanzania has six UNESCO World Heritage Sites, four of these sites are “natural sites”, and these include Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Selous National Park and Kilimanjaro. Two of which are "cultural sites" (man made), these include the Ruins of Kilwa Kisiwani and Songo Mnara as well as Stone Town of Zanzibar.
- Capacity building for literacy policy development. UNESCO worked in collaboration with the International Reading Association and Ministry of Education and Culture to improve the quality of literacy learning in Tanzania. Holding a stakeholders meeting which gathered the most relevant representatives of literacy policy development in Tanzania and the dissemination of the literacy policy recommendation paper.
- UNESCO facilitated the purchase of equipment (computers, cameras) to the media house TVT to improve their newsroom and effectively compete with other media houses.
